A Catholic lector, or reader, is a fully initiated and practicing member of the Church who proclaims the Word of God at Mass, with the exception of the Gospel. In the absence of a deacon, the lector also leads the Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful) and may at times proclaim the Responsorial Psalm. This role is a true liturgical ministry, giving voice to Scripture as it encourages, consoles, and strengthens the faith of the community.
