The History of Tithing at St Bernardine

At the beginning of the fiscal year 2004/2005 with the unanimous support of both the Parish Council and the Parish Financial Council, Father McNamara decided to make St. Bernardine's a Tithing Parish. This meant that we as a parish, well aware of the tremendous financial blessings God has given us, would in the coming year give away ten percent of our income.

A tithing committee was formed with a single directive from the pastor  "our tithe is not to benefit our parish in any way". Frank Loffa was chair, the other members being Priscilla Brehm, Jim Clark, Sonia Gioriani-Johnston, Gregoria Leoni, Glenn Sataloff and Father Robert McNamara, Pastor.

The committee went to work and after much discussion decided that the $100,000.00 tithe (it was raised slightly by the finance committee to facilitate ease of division) would be divided as follows: fifty percent would go to international needs, the other fifty percent would be divided equally between national needs and local needs.

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
