Co-Workers of the Missionary Brothers of Charity

“Love for Jesus in prayer,
love for Jesus in your brothers and sisters,
love for Jesus in the poorest of the poor.
Nothing else.”

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
Founder of Missionary Brothers of Charity

Mission Statement:  To assist the Missionary Brothers of Charity in their mission to feed, cloth and minister to the poor of downtown Los Angeles.

As co-workers of the Missionary Brothers of Charity, a team from St. Bernardine’s travels downtown each week and provides a hot lunch for the brothers and those in their care and invited guests. St. Bernardine has six teams and each team has cooks, drivers and other who go to serve. The Brothers serve the poorest of the poor and depend on Divine Providence for their needs. It is a rewarding and compassion filled ministry.

There are times when the team collects towels for the Brothers of Charity Day Care Center. This center provides a place for people to have a shower, get clean clothes and have a good lunch. The team collects back packs, knit caps, rain ponchos, and anything else that might ease the burden of the homeless.

God didn’t ask us to be successful, he asked us to be faithful. We may never eradicate the causes of being homeless and poor, but we can be faithful in helping them in their need. Our parish sponsors 6 teams. A team leaves around 10:45 AM on Sunday, serves lunch at noon, visits with the people and cleans-up. The team leaves to come home around 1:00 PM.

Interested persons can call Jean Sampson, 818-888-7073 for additional information or if you would like to volunteer.

Every Sunday, a team of Co-Workers from our parish takes a hot meal to the Brothers and those in their care.

  • Some members cook. Others take the food to downtown and serve the meal.
  • There are six teams and each team takes responsibility for delivering and serving the meal, once every six weeks.
  • These Co-Workers, imitating St. Teresa of Calcutta, practice doing small things with great love.
  • The Co-Workers always need drivers. Call Jean Sampson at the Parish Office.

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
