The Sacrament of the Eucharist
Role of Eucharistic Ministers
Eucharistic Ministers, along with the Priests and Deacons, minister the bread and cup to the assembly during the
Communion Rite of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The role of the Eucharistic
Minister, like that of all liturgical ministries, is more than simply a
practical function. The action of ministering the Eucharistic body and
blood of Christ is a ministry, that is, a service of love performed in
faith for the good of the community.
Current News
We are currently looking for qualified parishioners to join our ministry. We have just recently had an
orientation meeting with some new candidates, who are now Eucharistic Ministers.
We will be holding additional orientation meetings and training in the future.
If you are interested in participating in this serving ministry, contact Bob
Nicholas, Ministry Coordinator.
How Can I Become a Eucharistic Minister?
Qualifications include:
- Must be a practicing Catholic, having
been Baptized and Confirmed in the Catholic Church.
- Registered parishioner of St.
Bernardine of Siena.
- Mature demeanor with a willingness to
serve fellow parishioners.
- Attend scheduled training where the
“how-to’s” are explained.
Requirements:
- Maintain a prayerful demeanor.
- Follow the given schedule or find a
substitute.
- Arrive approximately 15 minutes early
to sign in and to meditate on the event that is to unfold during Mass.
- Stay after mass to assist in the

- Dress appropriately.
- Do not serve if you are sick and make

It is recommended that all Eucharistic
Ministers attend a day of Formation, put on periodically by the Archdiocese to
add to your theological foundation. Continuing education is provided to deepen
the minister’s understanding of the ministry and enrich the minister’s
awareness of the mystery of Christ and the people we serve.
History
In 1973, Pope Paul VI authorized
non-ordained persons to distribute Holy Communion. For over twenty years, lay
men and women of St. Bernardine’s have had the opportunity of serving as
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. Currently Eucharistic Ministers assist
the priest and deacons with the distribution of the Eucharist at all of the
weekday and weekend Masses, and during other Holiday and special Masses.
Scheduled Assignments
The assignments are provided in the Eucharistic Ministry schedules. These
cover a period of approximately 10 weeks and are sent to each minister.
See top of page.
