Tuesdays, April 9, 16, 23, 30 @ 9:30 a.m. to noon. Author Rita Keeley Brown conducts a four part Writing Workshop: Focus on Fiction. An Exploration of the power of fiction to engage topics often too sensitive or difficult for expository writing. Opportunity to create, explore and receive meaningful feedback. This is the second series of writing workshops Rita has offered here at St. B. She is back by popular request!

Presenter: Father Leon Hutton, Assoc. Professor of Church History, St. John's Seminary

                        Father Leon has graciously agreed to speak to issues raised in the book Voting and Holiness. 
                        This is a collection of essays edited by Nicholas Cafardi who is dean emeritus and professor of law at 
                        Duquesne University School of Law.  Heavy reference in the work is made to the USCCB booklet
                        Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (2008).

Presenter: Father Martin Henry, Lecturer at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth

    Father Martin has been on sabbatical in Germany working on translations of Overbeck's works. the He
    returns to us this summer and has suggested that we can explore the foundations of Christian
    mysticism through the thought of Meister Eckhart.

Presenter: Rabbi Gary Oren, Assoc. Rabbi at Temple Aliyah

    This is an outgrowth of the Tuesday evening bible study group which is currently studying Torah.  The
    group prepares questions in advance for Rabbi Oren and he graciously addresses them.

Monday August 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Center Hall: "Jesus, Bread for the World" Presenter: Parker Sandoval
Over five Sundays this summer, we hear Jesus' Bread of Life Discourse (John 6) in the Gospel readings.
Jesus fed the multitude with loaves and fish, and continues to feed us with his body and blood.
Jesus' words were difficult for many of his disciples to accept.
What is their meaning for us? Are they difficult for us, too?

    Father Leslie, of course, needs no introduction.  This presentation will address how he uses a so-called
    secular subject, English Literature, to address/introduce questions of morality, ethics, God

                        This session will get you acquainted and comfortable with ideas and the approach to writing your story.  Have you tried and are stuck, or you just don’t know where to start?
Let’s find that key to get you writing!

Session II   Let’s put those doubts aside and get words on paper

                        Once you know what you are comfortable with, you will be surprised at what you are able to accomplish.  Finding your style and voice can make your writing come alive!

 

Session III  Much of writing is re-writing

                   How to get your ideas down and refine them with good writing techniques.

                       

Session IV  Editing is essential to put your best foot forward in sharing your work

                        How to read your work effectively.  Available resources and submission requirements should you want to publish.

Thursday, February 9 Rita Keeley Brown presenting on her book Good Luck, Mrs. Brown, the true story of a family's life after the father manifests symptoms of schizophrenia.  Mrs. Brown is a St. B parishioner from the parish’s early days.  She began the CCD program in the parish. @ 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Center Hall.
Her book will be available for purchase.

 Thursday, February 2 Rabbi ~Arthur Rosenberg presenting one session on the Book of Esther @ 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Center Hall
Rabbi Rosenberg is a chaplain at the Motion Picture & TV Fund in Woodland Hills.  Previously he has illuminated the Books of Jonah and Ruth for our parish community.  His training as an actor, as well as, of course his rabbinical studies have helped us all to see these books in a new and refreshing light.

Stirring the Fires of Compassion:  "Am I My Brother's/Sister's Keeper?" will begin with an exploration of the level of the fire of faith we have within and how reflection on Jesus' life can serve to help us to be a compassionate presence in our conflicted and violent world.  The program will explore Christological themes as well as the current crisis and challenges surrounding human trafficking. Sister Rose Marie is scheduled to speak at all the masses on World Mission Sunday, October 23.
